We will start with the honest answer, because a lot of pages on this topic will not give it to you. There is no published microplastic particle count for any electrolyte powder. No brand commissions that testing. No watchdog has run the category. Mamavation, Clean Label Project, Consumer Reports, ConsumerLab, and Lead Safe Mama have all touched electrolytes or adjacent powders, and every one of them tested for PFAS, heavy metals, or label accuracy. None of them counted plastic particles.
So if you see a hydration brand advertising itself as microplastic free, it is a claim with nothing behind it. There is no test to pass, and nobody is checking.
The most comprehensive recent measurement is a 2025 University of Birmingham study in Science of the Total Environment, which analyzed seven categories of hot and cold drinks from the UK market. It found microplastics in 100 percent of beverages tested, at levels from around 17 particles per liter in soft drinks to 60 per liter in hot tea, and estimated average intake from drinks alone at 1.65 particles per kilogram of body weight per day. Juices and energy drinks in plastic bottles carried more than the same drinks in paper or aluminum packaging.

A 2024 Columbia and Rutgers study published in PNAS found roughly 240,000 nanoplastic particles per liter in bottled water, ten to a hundred times more than earlier microplastic counts had suggested. Electrolyte drinks are acidic by design, usually built on citric acid or citrate salts, and they get shaken. Acidity, agitation, and warmth are the three conditions that increase shedding from plastic surfaces. The stick pack, in proportion
Single serve electrolyte sachets are usually a three or four layer laminate: a polyester outer film for print and strength, a micro thin aluminum layer for the moisture and light barrier, and an inner sealing layer of polyethylene or linear low density polyethylene. We want to be proportionate here. Dry powder, at room temperature, in short term contact with polyethylene, is the lowest risk migration scenario that exists in food packaging. 3. The Sea Salt Paradox
This is the finding that reorganized how we think about the category.
Nearly every premium electrolyte brand names its salt as a selling point. Unrefined sea salt. Celtic salt. Redmond Real Salt. Pink Himalayan. The implication is that this salt is more natural, less processed, and therefore cleaner than the refined white stuff.
On the two contaminants this site cares about, the opposite is true.
Sea salt is evaporated from surface seawater, and surface seawater is where the plastic is. The heavy metals run the same direction. The trace mineral content that unrefined salts advertise is, chemically speaking, the contamination. You cannot keep the interesting minerals and drop the lead, because they arrive together from the same rock. Independent lab testing has measured Redmond Real Salt at roughly 250 to 290 parts per billion lead and 36 to 91 ppb arsenic, and a February 2025 proposed class action against Celtic Ocean International cited testing around 460 ppb lead and 140 ppb arsenic in Celtic varieties.
4. What the PFAS Testing Found

Read that table twice, because it inverts the usual assumption. Gatorade Zero, Pedialyte, Prime, Liquid I.V., LMNT, DripDrop, and Emergen C all returned non detect. A short organic ingredient list on the front of a sachet tells you nothing about what came in with the raw materials or the packaging, and this is one of the clearest demonstrations of that we have seen in any category.

LMNT is the biggest name in this category and the one readers ask about most, so it deserves the full story rather than a headline.
In November 2024, Lead Safe Mama had LMNT Raw Unflavored tested by an independent laboratory. The result was 27 parts per billion lead, with cadmium, arsenic, and mercury all non detect. Tamara Rubin's position is that a supplement claiming health benefits should not test positive for lead at any level, and she noted the result sits above the 10 ppb action level proposed in the 2021 Baby Food Safety Act.
In absolute terms, 27 ppb works out to roughly 0.16 micrograms of lead in a 6 gram packet. That is below California's 0.5 microgram daily threshold for a single serving, and well below the federal interim reference levels of 2.2 micrograms a day for children and 8.8 for women of childbearing age. Both of those facts are true at once, and which one you weight is a judgement call rather than a scientific one.
What is not a judgement call is what happened next. The health scoring app Oasis published a claim that LMNT contained seven times the legal lead limit. That figure was wrong, the app acknowledged a calculation error had inflated it, and LMNT sued Oasis in 2026 over the claim and the delay in retracting it. We include this because the same reflex that makes a site like ours useful, taking contamination seriously, also makes it easy to amplify a number nobody checked. The 27 ppb result is real. The seven times figure was not.

LMNT
The category leader, and non detect for fluorine in Mamavation's screen. But it settled a Proposition 65 lead action over its Recharge Orange Salt and Chocolate Salt mixes in 2021, its Raw Unflavored tested at 27 ppb lead in November 2024 independent testing, and three separate 2025 class actions allege that 300 to 450 mg of maltodextrin per serving hides behind a natural flavors listing in a product marketed as all natural, keto, and paleo.
To be fair to LMNT: the lead figure is small in absolute terms, and the widely shared claim that it carried seven times the legal limit came from a health app that conceded a calculation error. LMNT sued over it in 2026. Our issue is the maltodextrin labeling and the sodium load, at 1,000 mg per stick, which is a lot for daily use if you are not actually sweating it out.
Redmond Re-Lyte
Re-Lyte returned non detect for fluorine and has a genuinely short ingredient list, which is why it appears in a lot of clean roundups. The problem is upstream. Its mineral base is Redmond Real Salt, which independent laboratory testing has measured at roughly 250 to 290 parts per billion lead and 36 to 91 ppb arsenic. We do not recommend Real Salt as a daily cooking salt in our salt guide, and we cannot recommend it as a daily supplement either without contradicting ourselves.
Skratch Labs
Skratch has one of the better formulas in sports nutrition, real fruit and cane sugar with nothing synthetic, and its Sport Hydration mix was non detect for fluorine. But the Environmental Research Center filed a Proposition 65 notice in May 2022 and a complaint in September 2022 alleging lead, mercury, and PFOA in Skratch dietary supplements, settled in August 2023 with reformulation limits. Proposition 65 thresholds are strict and this plaintiff files frequently, so read it as a yellow flag rather than a scandal. It is still a settled action naming the brand's supplements on three chemicals including a PFAS compound, which is more than any of our picks carries.
Ultima Replenisher
Non detect for fluorine, zero sugar, stevia sweetened, and a decent mineral spread. A California class action alleges that its raspberry and watermelon flavors contain DL malic acid, the synthetic form extracted from petrochemicals, while the packaging claims natural flavoring. All five returned detectable total fluorine in Mamavation's 2023 lab work: FlavCity up to 277 ppm across repeat tests, Jigsaw Health 89 ppm, Paleovalley 47 to 55 ppm across two flavors, Trace Minerals PowerPak 23 ppm, and Plexus Hydrate 17 and 10 ppm on two rounds. Total fluorine is a screen rather than a specific PFAS identification, and Nuun and two others detected once then came back non detect, so a single hit is not proof.
