Plastic Detox (plasticdetox.org) is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we use it.

What We Collect

Analytics data. We use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand how visitors use our site. This collects anonymized data including pages visited, time on site, device type, and approximate location (country/city level). We do not collect or store personally identifiable information through analytics.

Email address. If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address. This is stored and processed by Brevo (formerly Sendinblue), our email service provider. We use your email only to send periodic tips about reducing plastic exposure. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email.

Quiz results. Your quiz results are stored locally in your browser (localStorage) so you can return to them later. This data never leaves your device and is not sent to any server.

The iOS App

The app holds the same brand database and the same plan the site publishes. This is what it does and does not send us.

Your plan stays on your phone. Which swaps you have completed, which you set aside, what you have saved, and what you have recently checked are all stored on the device. None of it is sent anywhere and we cannot see any of it.

The camera never leaves the phone. Scanning a barcode reads it on the device to look the product up in the database the app already holds. No image is uploaded, stored, or sent to us or to anyone else.

Anonymous usage events. The app records that things happened so we can tell whether it is any use: that the app was opened, that a swap was opened or completed or set aside, that a recommendation was viewed or saved, and whether the daily tip is switched on or was tapped. Each event carries the app version and nothing else about you or your phone. They are grouped by a random string the app makes up for itself the first time it runs, which exists only so one phone counts as one phone. It is not your device's identifier, it is not linked to your name, email, or Apple account, and deleting the app discards it.

Brand lookups. When you check a brand, the app sends us the brand name and whether we had a verdict for it, so we know which brands to research next. It does not send anything about you, the product you were holding, or where you were.

The daily tip. Notifications are scheduled by the app on your own device. Nothing is sent to us to deliver them, they work with no signal, and you can turn them off in the app or in iOS Settings.

Purchases. The Kids room is bought through Apple. Apple handles the payment and we never see your card, your name, your email, or your Apple ID. We receive only Apple's signed confirmation that the purchase happened.

No advertising and no tracking. The app contains no ad networks, no advertising identifier, and nothing that follows you into other apps or websites.

The Product Check Browser Extension

Our Chrome extension shows the verdict we have published for a brand while you are looking at a product on Amazon. This section covers what it does and does not do.

It works on your device. The brand database is downloaded to your browser and every lookup happens locally. We do not receive the products you look at, the searches you run, the pages you visit, or anything you buy. The extension refreshes its copy of the brand database from plasticdetox.org roughly twice a day, which is an ordinary file download and tells us nothing about you.

Brand requests are off unless you turn them on. The extension has one optional setting, off by default, called "Help us cover more brands." If you switch it on, then whenever you open an Amazon product page for a brand we have not reviewed, the extension sends us that brand name so we know what to research next. It sends the brand name and nothing else: no web address, no product, no price, no account, no identifier, and nothing at all for brands we have already reviewed. You can switch it back off at any time in the extension's popup, and it takes effect immediately.

No affiliate links, ever. The extension contains no affiliate links and never alters, adds, or redirects any link on Amazon. It cannot change where a purchase is credited, and it earns us nothing when you buy something.

What We Do Not Collect

Cookies

Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish unique visitors and sessions. These are first party cookies set by Google's analytics script. No advertising cookies are used on this site.

Affiliate Links

Our store contains affiliate links to Amazon and other retailers. When you click these links and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. These links are clearly marked. Affiliate partners may use their own cookies to track referrals. We have no control over third party cookie policies.
